Nervous System’s 3D Printed Dress Debuts at MFA

March 11, 2016 Nervous System’s 3D Printed Dress Debuts at MFA

At Body Labs, it’s our mission to provide human body shape and pose as a digital platform. This year, with our tech we’re empowering apparel companies and fashion designers to build around statistically-accurate body shape.

With accurate, reliable, and consistent 3D digital body shape in the hands of world’s most influential fashion designers, we can now help them to unlock unprecedented levels of creativity and personalization. This is why Body Labs is excited to highlight our continued partnership with Nervous System, which recently announced that their newest 3D printed dress would debut at The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston.

This dress is part of the MFA’s new exhibition #techstyle, which runs from March 6 to July 10, 2016, which showcases the synergies between fashion and technology. Nervous System’s dress is inspired by petals, feathers, and scales developed from a new textile language for Kinematics where 1,600 interconnected elements are articulated as imbricating shells through 2,600 hinges.

“Like our previous garments, this dress can be customized to the wearer’s body… and additionally, each element is now individually customizable: varying in direction, length, and shape,” said Jessica Rosenkrantz, co-founder and creative director at Nervous System, in a recent blog post.

Nervous System has also released a new design app that incorporates Body Labs’ Shape Explorer, enabling anyone to create their own customized version of this dress. By using Shape Explorer, users can quickly predict their body shape with statistical accuracy, using simple known measurements such as height and weight. Users can then seamlessly transfer their body shape into Nervous System’s design app to start stylizing their dress.

This workflow both ensures an accurate fit for the user, and enables the user to dynamically personalize their style on their body shape. There’s no software to install — all of this runs from the simplicity of a webpage.

After being designed and submitted for production, the dress emerges from the 3D printer fully assembled. This is achieved by using a smart folding strategy that enables 3D printers to print larger objects. The result is a more automated and streamlined production designed for you.

This is just a taste of what’s to come. We’re continuing to see the emergence of a product pipeline in which consumers can efficiently create their digital body shape, design or personalize in 3D, and then cost-effectively print garments at scale. At Body Labs, we want to remove the “fear of fit” so that you can focus on style and design preference. As a result, a world of possibilities for fashion, apparel, and beyond will be unlocked. Stay tuned.
